Summer Job
I’m a college student how has just finished their first year school.
I know Java, C++, C, HTML, CSS, Macromedia Flash, and I know basic C, PHP and MySQL.
Freshmen year of College: GPA 2.98+
High School GPA: 3.9+
And I can’t find a good job. Well I can work at Safeway but I want to have a semi-decent summer. Safeway is no Starbucks from what I’ve heard. Everyone has told me that Safeway is a miserable place to work.
So what kind of job would I like? I’d like to be a cashier, in retail, a website builder, or God bless an technical intern of some sort. But I just I didn’t plan on the job market shrinking to the size of me keyboard. Based on my results, I realized that I did not start applying early enough.
I started searching for jobs in late April/early May. Since then I’ve applied to 25+ jobs. Again I admit that I should have starting looking for jobs sooner but at the same time, getting a job this summer was not nearly as difficult as getting one last summer. I knew that a recession was coming, but I did not plan on the the economy tanking right before summer.
Everyone been saying it. “It’s hard to find jobs this summer.” I’m just glad that me getting a job is not crucial to my livelihood. I just need the job for college money. If I don’t get a job over the summer I will have to work during the school year. This is not horrible, but still,m it’s not very ideal.
Granted it’s not impossible to find a job. There are plenty of jobs out there but most the jobs are either miserable, don’t pay enough, or require that I know more languages, tools, skills that I don’t really have.
The job market this summer has become very un-cutesy. Last summer was “we have internships and extra money to spend on next to not important jobs.” This summer the market feels more like “We need professionals. If you’re not necessary, get OUT.” This summer also I got a lot of “we might have a job for you” only to be rejected a week or so later.
However, in spite of set backs, I still keep searching. And quite honestly, the more I search the more appealing Safeway becomes. Oh well. Next year I’m going to start applying for job in January than I know that I will have a job by July.
